No one is really certain as to the true identity of Mr. Goodchord. However, it is known that, during the 20th century, he travelled extensively throughout the world playing music and in search of the Lost Chord. During a trip to Nepal in the mid-eighties, he sent a mysterious package to the author asking that he study the material carefully that was contained therein. When the author opened the package, all he found was a thin piece of ancient parchment paper bearing the inscription: Get a Grip!

According to the author's own account: "There were curious arrows and dashes..even some circular patterns with letters stacked in a strange, vertical fashion...none of it made sense at the time. At first I thought that something was missing from the package...perhaps lost during shipping. The paper was torn at the bottom and appeared to be missing some information...perhaps an explanation of some sort. So, I threw the parchment away. Many music scholars have cursed that day, but I may never have discovered the real meaning of that message had I not disposed of it."
